Course Description

Environment Law I

Law is a key instrument in environmental protection. This course will expose students to the general legal framework governing the protection of the environment in Nigeria. In this course, we shall explore the values, assumptions, and guiding principles, which underlie this framework and how the Nigerian model of environmental protection compares to other models.

Environmental Law II

In this second part of the course, we shall explore the protection of the environment and its resources at the international level. Since the 1970s, international environmental law (IEL) has grown to become a recognized branch of public international law. Certain principles, treaties, conventions, judicial decisions and customary principles have shaped this rapid growth of IEL. Environmental Law II exposes students to the robust values, assumptions, and guiding principles, that underlie international environmental law; and how specific global problems such as climate change, stratospheric depletion of the ozone layer, transboundary movement of hazardous wastes, biodiversity, deforestation amongst others are addressed.
